Violin - Body measures about 14" long (23" total length) in full size and makes the highest sounds of the string instruments

  • It can be played with a bow or plucked
  • It is held under the chin and supported by the left shoulder; the right hand holds the bow
  • Notes are played by pressing one or more strings against the neck of the violin with the left fingers

Viola - Body measures about 16.5" long (27" total length) in full size and makes a darker, more mellow sound than the violin

  • It can be played with a bow or plucked
  • It is held in the same way as the violin
  • Notes are made in the same way as the violin. However, viola strings are thicker and more pressure needs to be applied on the bow when playing

Cello - Body measures about 30" long (48" total length) in full size and makes deep sounds that are an octave lower than the viola

  • It can be played with a bow or plucked
  • It is typically played sitting down with an endpin that rests on the floor to support the weight of the instrument
  • Notes are made in the same way as the violin. However, cello strings are even thicker than violas

  • It can be played with a bow or plucked
  • It is played standing up with an endpin that rests on the floor to support the weight of the instrument
