Name: Kyler
Grade: 8th
Level: Symphonic Band/Jazz Band
Instrument: Alto Sax
How long have you been playing?
5+ yrs
What sparked your interest in playing this instrument?
My sister was a major influence over my decision to join the band program at Simonds when I was in fourth grade. However, I didn't want to play the flute like she had done. Videos of saxophone players I had watched before had inspired me, sparking the idea that one day, I could sound just as good as they were.
What is your favorite musical piece that you've played?
My favorite musical piece that I've ever played is "Epic Gaming Themes" arranged by Paul Murtha. I performed this piece two years ago at the Level Up! Band Concert when I was in sixth grade.
What type of music do you most like to play and why?
The type of music I most like to play is contemporary because it encompasses a wide variety of modern songs that I've enjoyed playing throughout my three years in Castillero's band program.
What is giving/gave you the most trouble while learning, and what advice would you give to others having similar difficulties?
While learning, what gave me the most trouble was accepting exactly that: I was still learning. I wanted to master concepts so quickly that I would get frustrated with myself for every little mistake. So my advice to others would be take your time and don't be afraid of making mistakes. Everyone does it, and it's just a natural part of learning something new.
Any words of wisdom or encouragement for your peers?
No matter what, always play confidently, both when you're practicing by yourself or performing with others. It's the first step to achieving any goal you might have with your instrument, and you can't get anywhere until you start believing in yourself.
