Name: Alex
Grade: 8th
Level: Avant/Chamber
Instrument: Violin
How long have you been playing?
3-4 yrs
What sparked your interest in playing this instrument?
When I was in fifth grade, I enjoyed getting to see my brother play the violin, so once I joined middle school I figured I would try it out as well.
What is your favorite musical piece that you've played?
My favorite piece that I have played is Fugue in G Minor.
What type of music do you most like to play and why?
I mostly like to play classical music because I feel it shows what my instrument can really do and how I can play it well compared to pop music. Classical music really touches me more, and I have a great appreciation for it especially on string instruments.
What is giving/gave you the most trouble while learning, and what advice would you give to others having similar difficulties?
What gives me the most trouble is having to keep good posture while playing faster passages or playing sixteenth note rhythms. When playing these, I always want to make sure I breathe and keep my bow hand relaxed so I can make a good sound. Being relaxed is key - if you tense up it can be difficult to play parts of songs or scales correctly. So remember to stay relaxed and calm to play smoothly.
Any words of wisdom or encouragement for your peers?
Always make sure to keep trying and never give up. Sometimes a piece may look and seem difficult so you want to stop and give up, but that won’t be helpful in the future. Always try your hardest, count out the rhythms, and play your best because you are capable of doing anything!
