Grade: 8th

Level: Avant/Chamber

Instrument: Bass

Comment from Mr. Krijnen:

Great work in the month of August getting our basses set in beginning, tackling the Emerald Falcon Solo, and performing with Cambrian! Keep up the great work! You've shown tremendous leadership, focus and determination. Your engagement as a TA, leading both the Avant and Chamber orchestras while tackling such challenging repertoire, has been wonderful to see. You're doing great and I look forward to seeing how you continue to help shape the orchestra program!

How long have you been playing?

1-2 yrs

What sparked your interest in playing this instrument?

I had a friend that already played in the orchestra on this same instrument.

What is your favorite musical piece that you've played?

Coincident Dances by Jessie Montgomery

What type of music do you most like to play and why?

Classical and Jazz, because I like being the base of the beat.

What is giving/gave you the most trouble while learning, and what advice would you give to others having similar difficulties?

The hardest part in beginning for me was tone quality. I practiced open strings a lot to get my tone to where it is today.

Any words of wisdom or encouragement for your peers?

Practice every day!

How long have you been playing?

5 or more yrs

What sparked your interest in playing this instrument?

All of my older siblings were in orchestra, and I wanted to play in the orchestra too.

What is your favorite musical piece that you've played?

"Sing, Sing, Sing" by Bob Phillips

What type of music do you most like to play and why?

I like classical the best because it sounds cool and because it is so challenging.

What is giving/gave you the most trouble while learning, and what advice would you give to others having similar difficulties?

Probably the thing that was the most challenging was trying to relax my bow arm. I always tend to keep it tense. My advice would be to just teach yourself to relax, so that you can play and enjoy the music without your arm hurting.

Any words of wisdom or encouragement for your peers?

Pay attention-- not only to the director, but to the whole group, and stay focused!
