Name: Karina
Grade: 8th
Level: Avant/Chamber
Instrument: Viola
Comment from Mr. Krijnen:
I really appreciate how consistently you come prepared, stay on track, and support the students in 3rd period with such kindness. I also want to commend you on the leadership you’re showing in Avant and Chamber. Your preparation, responsibility, and willingness to step up make a real difference! You're an exceptional T.A and violist and well deserving of this recognition!
How long have you been playing?
5 or more yrs
What sparked your interest in playing this instrument?
When I heard songs that I recognized, I thought it was so cool and wanted to learn how to play those songs too.
What is your favorite musical piece that you've played?
There are so many to choose from, but Night Shift is one of my favorites.
What type of music do you most like to play and why?
Pop music is fun because it gets me energized, and it's fun to hear the music that we have grown up with.
What is giving/gave you the most trouble while learning, and what advice would you give to others having similar difficulties?
The hardest thing for me to do is to relax while playing. It's ok not to know everything but to relax and to enjoy playing my Viola.
Any words of wisdom or encouragement for your peers?
Go slow to learn fast as Mr. K says!

Name: Viraj
Grade: 8th
Level: Avant/Chamber
Instrument: Violin
Comment from Mr. Krijnen:
As a T.A., I’m really impressed by how thoughtful and aware you are in 4th period. You never lose focus, you’re diligent, and you maintain high standards while always looking for ways to support your students. Those are impressive attributes for an 8th grader! I also appreciate how prepared and ready to lead you are in Chamber and Avant every single rehearsal. You are doing a fantastic job and I look forward to seeing how you continue to grow!
How long have you been playing?
3-4 yrs
What sparked your interest in playing this instrument?
I listened to the Castillero Orchestra during many concerts and the orientation before 6th grade. I saw how the violins had a melody or leading part in the pieces and that really caught my attention which led me to pursue playing violin.
What is your favorite musical piece that you've played?
John Williams Trilogy is my favorite piece because it is one of the first pieces I played that I knew from a few of my favorite movies and shows I like.
What type of music do you most like to play and why?
I like classical music the most because it has a huge variety of pieces for many skill levels, so wherever I am at, I can find a classical piece that challenges me to improve my skills.
What is giving/gave you the most trouble while learning, and what advice would you give to others having similar difficulties?
Vibrato is something I am still working on because my hand needs to not be squeezing my violin, but I have found that really difficult. I would advise someone else having this problem to ask Mr. K or a private teacher on the proper technique and spend practice time everyday working on that technique.
Any words of wisdom or encouragement for your peers?
Something that is hard today will be easy in the future, so don't bring yourself down, just keep practicing everyday.
